Disney World, Here We Come!
The kids have three more weeks until school is out for the summer. These last few weeks always seem to fly by with final tests, reports, parties, and field day. It’s time to register the kids for their summer camp choices and fit a family vacation in there, too.
This is the year we are finally taking the kids to Disney World for a week of all things Disney. We will be going in July, and it will be our first long-distance family road trip. I know I'm asking for it because it was my idea to drive to Orlando from Texas -- not only save money but to have the freedom that comes with having our own car and being on our own schedule. Remind me later, that it was my idea to drive, if two children come home with their ears boxed and mouths taped shut. A friend told me that this would not happen if we travel with the kids strapped to the roof of the car and the luggage in the back seat.
I thought it would be convenient to stay at a Disney resort, especially with transportation to and from the various parks, but then I realized that we would be setting ourselves up to be totally saturated by the Large Mouse. I don't want to be Disney-tized. Sure, I want the parks to be fun for the kids, but we need a place to relax and chill out at the end of the day. I need a washer/dryer and a kitchen so we can have our own meals and not be on the Disney fast food wagon. We are going to stay at a private condo less than 2 miles from the park which came with high marks from a friend who stayed there with her family.
Now, if I could just figure out the park ticket and pass options. If anyone has any recommendations on what to consider when purchasing park tickets, let me know. It’s like picking out features for a new car or computer with all the options like Park Hopper, water parks, and so on.

There is a great book that is worth the $20 - The Unofficial Guide to DIsney. If you don't have it - buy it. Any book store should have it. It does a pretty good job of explaining the advantages of the various types of tickets. We always get the park hopper but we stay on-site. If this is your first trip and you will have a car, I would probably not pay the extra money for the park hopper. I would just plan to go to a different park each day. My kids (who are now 16, 12, & 9) love the water parks and given that you are going in the summer, I would plan on a day or two there. Your kids may or may not need a full day at Epcot but will love Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. Animal Kingdom is much smaller.
Have a great trip!

You will be Disney-tized the first time you buy a bottle of water for $5 and think it's OK. :) You will have a great, great time!

Thanks for the book recommendation and comments. What really interested me was whether or not the hopper feature was something that was worth it or not. I mean, if you are at one park for the day, you are there and there should be plenty to do without hopping around to other places, right? I hear the lines are long enough, and who would have time to hop around and use that feature?
My parents took us to Disney World the summer after my 7th grade. I've been there a few times sine then, and so has Jerry, but we've never taken the kids and gone together or as a family. I also noticed that the cut-off age for kids is 9 (can you believe that? 9!!) and Rachel will turn 10 in August, so this is a good time to go and save a little.

Yes, you are right about not needing the hopper if this is the first time you are going as a family. It is really more useful for people who go frequently and stay on the property and want to go to one park in the morning, back to their hotel for a few hours and then back to a different park at night. Enjoy!

Park hopper...waste. I went with the girls and the ex and they screwed up something so we were upgraded to that option for free, but it would have been even more draining than it was already to try to do multiple parks in one day. The only thing I regret is not doing the water parks. We went in July and it was HELL. Of course, Victoria was about 4 at the time, so she might have been too small for the water stuff.
